What if the world's greatest pirate story...WASN'T just a story?
In 2007, I was reading an article on BBC online about the lost gold of Prince Charles Edward Stuart, Bonnie Prince Charlie. A tattered letter, believed to be from 1746, had shown up in a bric-a-brac shop, its faded scrawl promising to lead to the location of the lost Louis d'Ors that were to have financed Charlie's rebellion all those years ago. Famed archaeologist, Neil Oliver, of the BBC television program "History Detectives", was on the hunt. He would sift through the ancient clues to determine if and where the treasure might actually be. Ah, ha, I thought. THIS was a story worth writing!
Now, of course, treasure always make me think of pirates, and who doesn't think of famous Scots author Robert Louis Stevenson when the word "pirate" gets bandied around? So, I began my own personal treasure hunt, digging through the clues of history. Sifting through old volumes of boys' adventure stories. Walking in the virtual footsteps of Stevenson through the streets of Edinburgh...and, boy, did I find some golden nuggets! There WERE clues! Just enough fact to make the fiction sparkle and give the adventurous reader a serious case of gold fever! And so, The Gubbins Club: The Legend of Charlie's Gold was born.
Readers are invited to join Smout, Rory, Bogey, Emma and Mad Dog, five unlikely friends and find a king's ransom in gold. But, they’re not the only ones looking for the treasure. Who will find it first? If you’re brave enough to join the chase, there are only three rules: follow the clues; find the treasure; and try not to get dead.
If you survive the journey, you can take a chance at winning your OWN treasure! In the spirit of the Best of Summer 2013 Kid Lit Giveaway Hop, readers can enter the drawing below for an opportunity to score a chest full of pirate plunder, including:
