Take a Rollicking Rickshaw Ride Through Middle-Grade Adventure with "Zoe & Zak and the Ghost Leopard"
Melinda T. Falgoust
"Welcome to India, Zoe Guire."
At least, that's what 11-year old Zoe hinks she hears the mosaic of the Hindu god Ganesha say to her. But, mosaics simply don't talk. That would be wild.
So is the adventure Zoe is about to begin.
When Zoe's mother travels to India on business, she takes her daughter along for the ride, believing the trip will be "educational". But, Zoe learns much more than she or her mother expect...and so will reader's of Lars Guignard's middle-grade action adventure.
Zoe & Zak and the Ghost Leopard is the first in a series that pairs up an unlikely duo - the always-prepared Zoe and the fly-by-the-seat-of-his-pants Zak Merril. Both children arrive in India with their respective parents. While the two children know each other, they are hardly dast friends. As Zoe narrates the story, readers are soaked in the sights, sounds and smells of Delhi...and maybe one or two of Zak's obnoxious cannonballs in the hotel pool.
When strange things start happening to Zoe, like odd dreams of morphong mountain men and garrulous pool decorations, the two children realize that the real adventure lies beyond the walls of their hotel. Curiosity and happenstance put them on the trail of the mysterious "ghost leopard" and directly in the path of the dangerous, but "cheekily" nick-named Rhino Butt.
The story truly finds its footing in CHapter 3 when the children overhear a covert conversation. Lovers of adventure will delight in the breathless escapades and harrowing narrow escapes as the children plunge deeper into the heart of India and its magical secrets.
Mr. Guignard brings a vivid first-hand description of India, its foods, people and customs to his novel. The reader feels as thought India is as much a character of the story as Zak or Zoe.
In short, if you have a reader with a thirst for adventure, let them take a rollicking rickshaw ride through the middle-grade grade magic of Zoe & Zak and the Ghost Leopard.
